Larry Meets Frank Sinatra

Hear about Frank Sinatra springing an amazing one-liner on Larry in this very special VEGAS special! NOT live from the Riviera hotel!

Show Summary

Does the show travel to Vegas? No, but Larry just got back from there, so stories about Sin City abound. Included are Larry’s time spent opening for Frank Sinatra and basking in the glow of Jilly Rizzo and other characters from the Sinatra crowd. Plus, Larry talks about the changes he’s seen in Vegas over the years.

Also hear about Larry’s fascination with Vegas, which seems to have started with the old-school ways of the Merv Griffin show. Learn what a “weekend in Palm Springs” look is and why you don’t want it.

Larry gets his shaving cream confiscated by the TSA, but has his dignity and his Old Spice spared. Ultimately, our host’s honesty wins out over his disdain for wasting aftershave and the world is a better place for it.

Then we hear about the blue Brooks Brothers blazer that he wore on TV so many times that even his own mother got sick of looking at it.

And where is our engineer Chris this week? Is he in class? Is he drunk? Is he drunk in class? Is he drunk with no class? At any rate, for this week’s episode, the role of Katie Levine will be played by Ed Asner.

Quote of the week:

    “Call me cuddles.”

If it’s possible to hook it up that your Amazon link connects to whatever local Amazon the clicker is in (eg. For me, it would go to amazon.ca) that would make it a lot easier for international audience to do our bit to support the show(s).

    Another gem, Larry.

Speaking of disappointments, I went to see “Inherit the Wind” on Broadway in the early 1990s starring George Scott. Scott was out that day so I got stuck with Tony Randall, a fine actor but not what I was hoping for. Why couldn’t co-star Charles Durning have taken ill instead?

I received my LMDS card this week so Thank You very much. I just had to write something here to show my appreciation.

Last week you talked about “Billy Budd” but never mentioned that before the stage and screen versions, it was an unfinished Herman (Moby Dick) Melville novella published posthumously. Checking Wikipedia, it seems the version I was forced to read in high school (Foretopman) was actually the wrong one. Isn’t that always the case?

    That is all. Carry on.

Hey Larry did you ever wonder what the hell did they do with all that confiscated stuff at the airport? It seems like you could do a bit on that stuff, like maybe they should donate all the shaving cream to some homeless shelter but I’m sure that once it got there it would blow up, or they are scared because doesn’t every guy there look like Ted Kaczynski.

I was wondering something today while listening to this at work (even though it’s against the rules to have a radio/mp3 player). If I download a podcast from this site instead of iTunes will This Week with Larry Miller be credited with a download? I really enjoy your show and that is the only way I download it. I would hate for you to have a fan but not get credit for one. Sorta like drinking a bunch and then finding out it’s a Shirley Temple.

Either way keep up the great work. I do have to say your sign-off chokes me up from time to time. Sometimes I’m a winner and sometimes, well, I play hurt that weekend.

    Thank you Mr. Miller.

Hi Brian — both iTunes and the show’s website pull the episode from the same place. So, it’s like two different stores, but the product originates from the same shelf at the same warehouse. Long story not-so-short, we get credit for it either way. Thanks for thinking of us and thanks for listening. We’re glad you enjoy it.

Perfect show Larry! I felt like I was there with Frank when you described the sounds and all. You were definitely part of a slice of history. Thanks for sharing. Game over I’ve won!

  • John in PDX

Lov the stories Larry. You seem like such a together sort of guy for an actor/comedian. A truly happy person. Always refreshing. Thanks for sharing. j

This has to be the perfect podcast: Las Vegas, Merv Griffin, Ed Asner, Milton Berle, Jilly Rizzo and Frank Sinatra stories.

On top of that I received my LMDS card today. I will be celebrating with a cocktail tonight.

Larry I agree, you gave your word about the after shave and leaving it is the right thing to do. Would the TSA agent have known if you had brought it back? No. But you would have know. And that makes all the difference in the world. Keep it on the up and up!

Your storytelling of Vegas, including memories of Merv Griffin and Frank Sinatra, had my complete attention. I appreciate how you give a Hemingway-like description of the smallest details to make me feel involved. Thank you for being a podcast that I can listen to in front of my young family (aka no Old School earmuffs required). Keep up the outstanding work!

Catching up on my TWLM (sounds like I’m in the army, geez).

Hey, all I can say is Larry you make the world a better place. What a great image of Sinatra and company. I think the world is a better place when performers of that caliber act like that for performers and the fans:

    “They’re gonna be great!”

A neat reminder that the audience is part of the experience too.

Oh and I’m gonna have some beers with my LMDS card tonight.

  • Chris M

That was another great story Larry, one that reaffirms my theory that back then, the people who made it to the penthouse would send the elevator back to the lobby…

  • Susan In L.A.

Wow! Your description of the band striking up just after you finished your act gave me chills. The picture you painted of Jilly and his drink was also a delight.
