Larry Hits Level Five!

Larry has an all-night bender and lives to tell the tale. Hear about his meeting with the business end of “God’s flashlight.” He talks about how he can’t make a martini at home and reveals his recipe for the “jalapeno martini.” And find out why Larry did NOT participate in strip bingo. The answer will not surprise you at all.

Show Summary

Also in this episode, Larry talks about his Grandma, who never let her family buy her an air conditioner and why his Grandma always read the last ten pages of a book first.

We once again discuss the finer points of melding soap bars. Can it be done in a microwave? Is that wrong? Larry says yes, and no, respectively. Larry’s open to admitting he’s wrong, but takes a stance against soap on a rope.

Pictured at top: Larry with the actual show notes from this episode, which is to say, a blank page. The squiggle at the top of the page was where Jeff scribbled to see if Larry’s pen was working. This is a true story. Fiction is never this boring.

Quote of the week: “I’m not in a John Ford movie, here. This isn’t Wagons West.”

Does your microwave have a button that says “power” on it?

If so press it until the screen says “20”

Great episode. Yes Larry, when you go back to NYC and go to The Standard, when you do find out, please tell us the name and location of that after hours bar. I now want to go to that bar. I am sure all the new business from your show listeners will bring will certainly pay interest on your tip payment. As always, another great story. Thanks.

Congrats on hitting level five, Larry!

You give me hope that my own drinking career will extend for many successful and fruitful years to come.

The Icelandic LMDS “”we are on our knees.”” This show just gets better by the week, if only it would be a little bit longer. GO LMILLER GO

    Here’s some info from the ever-popular Wikipedia…

“The control panel keypad always contains a Start button and a Stop button (the latter sometimes also performing a Clear function), numeric buttons for entering the cook time, a button for selecting the power level (usually decrementing by 10 from 100 to 50, or using words such as High, Medium High and Medium; see more below)

Most microwave ovens allow users to choose between several power levels. In most ovens, however, there is no change in the intensity of the microwave radiation; instead, the magnetron is turned on and off in duty cycles of several seconds at a time. This can actually be heard (a change in the humming sound from the oven), or observed when microwaving airy foods which may inflate during heating phases and deflate when the magnetron is turned off. For such an oven, the magnetron is driven by a linear transformer which can only feasibly be switched completely on or off. Newer models have inverter power supplies which use pulse width modulation to provide effectively-continuous heating at reduced power so that foods are heated more evenly at a given power level and can be heated more quickly without being damaged by uneven heating.”

More than you will ever need to know about power settings.

And, since microwave manufacturers refuse to assimilate, your particular model can have either a “Power Level” or a High/Med/Low or some obscure set of button presses.

Perhaps if you were to provide the make/model of the microwave in question, we can provide a greater level of detail. 🙂

Listen to your cast on the way to (BTW -41c in Winnipeg today)

…and your point about GREAT times “just happen” and they are not planned…is SO true!…I figured that out years ago myself…all the level five times I ever had were always unplanned and they just happened!

GREAT cast…keep up the good work!

When are you coming back to Winnipeg? (I recommend June Or July….NOT now)

    Sir,

You are a bright spot in an otherwise dark commute. I like the new wednesday slot. Last week you talked about the micro joys of life, thank you. I would love to pour you a double sometime-BTW: really need to sign up for the drinking society.

  • Doug Davis

Thanks for the mention. Maybe you should have the Larry Miller Drinking Society then like a union have Local Societies and you’d be the National society.

Not paying or catching the cab fare because you were wasted. Ha-Ha I’ve been in that situation before. I’ve actually called my local bar to make sure that I paid my tab for the night. And anyone else who has ever done this will know what they told me. You have to call back later for the night shift. Yeah sometimes the day shift will know but usually the night bartender has to cover the tab so you have to talk directly to the bartender. Yeah I absolutely have been “hammered like that”

The worst is getting so drunk you just leave your credit card, (tab unpaid) at the bar and then you worry all the next day (because you might have dropped it in a puddle when you fell over and skinned your knees as the bouncer was helping you into the cab )in your hungover stupor until the bar opens at 7 or so and then you have to sheepishly call and ask the bartender if he has it. Then you slink in ( as you have a horrific flashback of yourself grinding on the dancefloor with a fellow that resembled slingblade) to quickly sign it and overtip and remind yourself to stay out of that bar for a long, long time… 🙂

Do you mind if I quote a couple of your articles as long as I provide credit and sources back to your weblog? My blog site is in the exact same area of interest as yours and my visitors would really benefit from some of the information you provide here. Please let me know if this alright with you. Thanks!
